2016 Waikato District Youth Awards - Shane Edwards Wins the Kia Kaha Award

Sunset Beach lifegaurds attended the Annual Waikato District Youth Awards for contribution to the Community for 12 - 24 year olds.

Shane Edwards and Robert Graham were Finalists for the Kia Kaha Award. 'Young People who have contributed in meaningful ways to their community'.

Shane Edwards was the winner of the Kia Kaha Award and Robert Graham a runner up. Congratulations to you both. Well deserved nominations and a huge asset to our community. Read Shane's Nomination below:

Shane Edwards joined our club in 2004 as a junior guard. He has risen through the ranks of our volunteer lifesaving club and in this time he has contributed significantly to the community of Port Waikato. He has trained a large number of local guards to become proficient as rescue boat crews and as patrolling members. This year alone he has trained two rescue boat (IRB) instructors and supervised the training of 15 crewmen and 15 drivers.

The community has benefited by his input as the beach is a safe place for the community family's to recreate over the summer period. He has been involved in a number of very high profile rescue missions and is a member of the Port Waikato region after hours patrol. All of this work is carried out voluntarily.

He sets a very high example for other lifeguards to follow and is held in high regards by the people of Port Waikato. He has been recognised by the Northern Region and the NZ Surf Lifesaving Association as a leader in his highly specialised area of life guarding expertise.

NZ BP Surf Rescue Championships, Top Club

It was 'rent a crowd' at Papamoa with all the supporters from Port Waikato at the Champs to watch our teams compete.

Trust Waikato Sunset Beach Lifeguard Service can be proud of our young achievers who were awarded the BP Trophy for Top Club at the NZ BP Surf Rescue Championships at Papamoa, April 2nd and 3rd, 2016.  With 39 Points, Sunset were clear winners with nearest Papamoa and East End on 22 Points.  Check out the Podiem photo with the team singing Shane Edwards Happy Birthday, what a prize to win for your Birthday, well done Shane!

Hogan Shrimpton and Lewis Powell were awarded Top NZ Senior Men's Crew with Gold medal for Mass Rescue which gives them entry into the Premier Grade 2017, Silver medal for Assembly Rescue and Bronze Medal for Single Rescue.

Sisters, Taylor and Robbie Shrimpton stole the show in the women's competition and were awarded Top NZ women's crew.  Winning Gold Medals in the Assembly Rescue, Tube rescue and Mass Rescue, they narrowly missed a 4th gold medal in the Single Rescue coming home for Silver.

The U21 Men's competition was fierce but for their first Nationals Jacob Pullen and Joshua Andrews stood up to be counted and were awarded Gold medal in the Single Rescue, Silver medal in the Assembly Rescue and Bronze medal in the Tube Rescue.

Premier Grade was tough but Shane and Mark Edwards expected that.  Made finals, took away Bronze Medal in the Mass Rescue for some very close racing and with the help of Lewis Powell and Hogan Shrimpton were awarded Bronze medal in the Open Teams Race.

Well done to Glen Richards, Anton Baptist, Judd redmond and Jhett Hunt for it only being their second competition and doing as well as you all did. Medals will be coming you way every soon - look forward to 2017.

To the patients, managers, officials and behind the scenes workers a big 'Thank you'.
