Sunset Beach wins Surf Boat Series at North Island Surf Boat Championships - Waihi Beach 3rd February 2018

Sunset Beach Surf Boat crews could only stand and watch as the huge surf at Waihi Beach was relentless. The only crews to race were the open men's and much later in the day, one final race for 7 women's crews. Yes, they were disappointed but we're happy they're all safe and unharmed. Series medals were decided on points from the last 3 series. Congratulations to 'The Young Guns', Gold medal for winning the U23 Men's Surf Boat Series. Congrats also to the Sunset Hipsters who take out Silver Medal in the U19 Men's.  It will be back to the beach Sunday for the Sunset Young Guns who will be representing Northern Region in the Surf Life Saving NZ Regional Surf Boat Challenge. Surf is predicted to be better. Whew!!

It was a great change to test our skills against the other regions coming up to North Island Champs. The Canoe racing also shared our arena and these are photos of the Northern Regions Teams. Well done Sunset in large testing surf. Was not easy racing... Northern Region won the Silver Medal being piped by Bay Of Plenty by a couple of points. Northern Region IRB Championships – Ruakaka 13th January 2018

Sunset Beach had 9 teams competing at the Northern Region IRB Championships today.  The racing was fast and furious with a lot of the races being straight finals except for the U22 Men’s Races.  Sunset Beach retained their Top Northern Region Title with 77 points, 55 points clear of 2nd place Mairangi Bay on 22 points.

Sunset Beach’s Senior Men’s teams were the best performers on the day.  The Edwards brothers, Shane and Mark won 4 gold medals, chased hard by Lewis Powell and Hogan Shrimpton.  They then combined to win the Open Teams race.  In the women’s, Taylor Shrimpton and Jemima Ferrier had some close racing with the St Clair team but were the winners with 3 gold and a silver.

Judd Redmond and Jhett Hunt earned themselves 3 gold medals in the U22 Men’s,  hottly contested by the Mairangi Bay crews.

Busy Christmas Day Managing Large Crowds

Sunset Beach Lifeguards spent a very busy Christmas Day managing large crowds looking to cool down after a hot day with family Christmas celebrations. For some of those it meant having a day at the beach for a picnic and family day. Some with too much Christmas cheer.
4pm with tide now heading out and the lifeguards had already done 7 assists, 101 preventative actions involving 425 people. Peak head count for the day was 240 persons and lifeguards had about 100 + people in the water from around 1pm
